Consequently, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is expected to induct only 100 JF-17s into service between this year and 2014, and subsequently switch over to the acquisition of another 150 JF-17-derived fifth-generation stealthy MRCAs between 2015 and 2025. Present plans call for the latter MRCA to be powered by SNECMA Moteurs’ M88-3 twin-shaft bypass turbofan, incorporate a digital glass cockpit and open-architecture avionics suite, and use SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems’ Vixen 500E X-band multi-mode active phased-array radar, or AESA, an integrated electronic warfare/defensive aids suite being developed by China’s CETC, along with a helmet-mounted sighting-cum-cueing system for which systems from THALES, BAE Systems and Denel Aerospace are being evaluated. The M88 turbofan for this aircraft will have variable camber inlet guide vanes, while its high-pressure compressor will have a sixth stage, and its exhaust nozzle will be of the ejector type. The turbofan will deliver 50kN (11,250lb) of dry thrust and 75kN (17,000lb) with afterburning. The primary offensive armament to be carried by this aircraft will be two underwing-mounted Hatf-8 (also called ‘Raad’ or ‘thunder’ in Arabic) air-launched cruise missile, which has a range of 350km. For air combat engagements, the stealthy MRCA will be armed with three types of air-to-air missiles: 60km-range PL-12 beyond visual range missile; 15km-range PL-13 within visual range missile; and PL-14 ramjet-powered 100km-range missile. just wondering…how does this help Pakistan, this whole project is a waste of money and resources.BR/BR/Firstly India is not attcking Pakistan…it never will as India is economically superior and has aspirations like china and Russia at Davos. secondly Pakistan has an enemy with-in…the fundamentalists and the taliban.BR/BR/I wish this money could be spent in combating terrorism, developing a sustainable infrastructure for defence and basic population issues like education and women empowerment.
Pakistan is proposed this project because of the fear of Indian Su-FGFA project. It’s afraid it will fall way behind India.BR/BR/But I doubt this project will be more than a drawing on a paper because China already has two stealth fighter project would doubt China would waste time and money on this.BR/BR/Pakistan can join those project though, wonder why they decide to start a new one?
I’ve read this article and from what it seems, it sounds like complete fanboy garbage. First of all, what is the ‘source’ for this source. Usually they mention CCTV or the People’s Daily for this level of high level information, especially something that happened months ago. Secondly, Chengdu letting Russia having part of the pie? What does Chengdu have to gain from letting Russia into the JF-17 deal? And it just goes on! We expect France to export the M88-3? I’ve never read about any defence deal ever between China and France (Unless you consider Dassault’s sale of the Mirage 2000 to the Republic of China, which actually only makes such a transfer more unlikely). Then on top of that, THALES, BAE Systems and Denel Aerospace are being contact to develop a HMS for this ‘aircraft’? Chengdu has already developed a HMS, why waste time and money on turning the JF-17 into a flying mini-United Nations? The most utterly damaging part of the article that just plain proves this article can’t be true is the claim of using the Vixen 500E AESA radar which would be INPOSSIBLE. Only last month the co-developed KAI/Lockheed-Martin F/A-50 project gave up on aquiring the Vixen 500E after the transfer was barred from sharing the T-50′s source codes with non-US companies after nearly a DECADE of trying to aquire it. This is a jointly developed Korean/American aircraft here. From a country who relies heavily on the US for mutual defence, stations and cooperates with thousands of US troops station in it and maintains excellent relations with it. Yet you’re telling me that in a few short months that the US is willing to sell their most advance radar systems to a country that it won’t even sell new F-16s to and on an aircraft jointly developed by Russia and China? Then it talks about carrying these ‘PL-13′ SRAAM and ‘PL-14′ LRAAM with the help of Denel!? That doesn’t even make any sense? I’ve never heard of these missile programs, you can’t just develop a missile at the drop of a hat. China is already developing a long range missile itself anyway! The PL-21, why would it develop a second one!? This entire thing reads like a bad fanfiction.

U try to veil ur comments on the FGFA (“I doubt this project will be more than a drawing on a paper”) under a vague shadow of dismissal and rebuttal. Know what? It is the inherent fear of the mighty and flamboyant IAF that makes u squeal in such feeble a tone. If the Su-30 MKI made the IAF mighty then the FGFA will make the IAF mightier still. For once………… read the reviews of JF-17 before resorting to lofty claims……… It is blesses wid a substandard avionics suite (courtesy…China), a lumberjack-like aluminum body, a substandard ws-10a engine, it lacks super-cruise capability and has a radar signature which wud make it appear like a rugby ball on any standard radar screen. It is at best a 3.5-4 gen fighter. So why beat ur drums over so mediocre a plane!!!!
On the other hand, the induction of the FGFA in the IAF will be a fitting reply to the overblown (and undeserving) ambitions of the Pakis and the Chinese (manifested in their attempts to scare India with roughshod flyinf machines like the JF-17 and J-10). Who knows, it may turn out to be a healthy deterrent to the world-dominating aspirations of the Raptor-wielding USAF. Needless to mention, it will bring about much needed stability in Asia (by thwarting the Chinese plans of tatooing their foreheads with the ’superpower’ tag) and also teach the Chinese and the Pakis some ‘much-needed’ repect.

At this moment it is the only south Asian fighter air craft.
