The military also released a video captured by the plane’s on-board camera as it was flying above Transylvania.br /br /The recording shows solid bodies, which authorities are working to determine the identity of. Embraer may offer Tucano planes to US for Iraq use

pSAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) — Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is participating in preliminary negotiations to sell the U.S. government eight 314-B1 Super Tucano light attack and training planes for use in Iraq, the company said Monday./ppEmbraer also confirmed that it sold one of the propeller-driven planes to a subsidiary of Blackwater Worldwide, the world’s largest security contractor and the target of harsh criticism for its conduct in Iraq./ppThe plane maker is offering Washington the Super Tucano in a tender process opened by the U.S. government, according to an Embraer spokesman who declined to be named in keeping with company policy./ppEmbraer, or Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, has sold 99 of the planes to the Brazilian military and 25 to neighboring Colombia’s air force — mostly to fight drug trafficking along the countries’ Amazon border, the spokesman said./ppA light fighter like the Super Tucano — which the Brazilian military outfits with .50-caliber machine guns under each wing — could be used to patrol Iraq’s borders with Iran and Syria, where the U.S. military says militants and weapons are routinely smuggled./ppThe U.S. has provided small planes before to the nascent Iraqi air force, which has about 1,500 personnel and 50 aircraft — mostly small propeller planes and helicopters./ppThe Embraer spokesman confirmed the sale of a Super Tucano to Blackwater subsidiary EP Aviation./ppBrazilian law prohibits a private company from selling arms for use in existing conflicts, but the spokesman said the plane was not shipped with any armaments and was intended for training purposes in the U.S./ppIf the U.S. government decides to buy the Tucano from Embraer and requests that they be outfitted with weapons, at that point the Brazilian government would have to step in and negotiate the sale, the Embraer spokesman said./ppNeither the foreign or defense ministries would comment on that assertion./ppThe plane sold to EP Aviation was bought for US$4.5 million and delivered at the end of February. Records on the Web site of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that EP Aviation had registered a Super Tucano./ppBlackwater, the largest private security company in the world, has been under scrutiny as a U.S. federal grand jury investigates its involvement in the shooting deaths of 17 Iraqi civilians. Blackwater also is under investigation for possible weapons smuggling allegations — accusations the company denies.br //ppSource:a href=”http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/06/02/ap5072196.html”Forbes/abr //p

Bush later on Wednesday for talks that could include Israel’s interest in the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter. Israel also may be interested later in the F-35B version that can land vertically./pp”It’s possible that things could come up,” said Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman, when asked about possible Bush-Olmert talks on arms sales to Israel. “Obviously Israel wants to defend itself, and the United States has been supportive.”/ppAn Israeli Embassy spokesman declined to comment./ppIsrael is seeking to integrate its own weapons, communications, command, control and intelligence systems into the F-35, said the Pentagon program official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the matter’s sensitivity./ppThe U.S. official predicted a government-to-government agreement would occur in the fall of 2009, after the projected completion of contract negotiations and technology-transfer pacts./ppIsrael recently submitted a formal request for pricing information and wants to start buying “as early as fiscal 2011,” the official said, adding deliveries typically take about two years./ppLockheed Martin, the Pentagon’s No. 1 supplier, said on Wednesday it had “production maturity and capacity to handle additional F-35 aircraft in the 2011 time frame and beyond.” The company calls the F-35 the most electronically advanced aircraft ever built, with capabilities unavailable in current multi-role fighters./ppThe F-35A is expected to have an unrefueled combat radius of 600 nautical miles or so, according to the Congressional Research Service and other experts, meaning the distance it could travel to a target and return without refueling./ppPossible Iranian targets are more than 700 miles from Tel Aviv, depending on the flight route. Israel recently has stepped its work on mid-air refueling./ppIsrael’s proposed early purchase of the F-35 is good news for Lockheed Martin and for the Pentagon program, which is pushing co-development partners to stick to projected purchase plans to keep the aircraft as affordable as possible./ppThe “average unit recurring flyaway costs” for the F-35A have remained stable in the upper $40 million range in baseline 2002 dollars, said John Smith, a Lockheed Martin spokesman. Early purchases could cost considerably more./ppSo far, Lockheed Martin has one U.S. order for two F-35As plus funding authorization for six more along with six of the F-35B “short takeoff and vertical landing” models./ppEight countries, including Britain, Turkey and Australia, helped foot the bill to develop the F-35./ppLockheed’s key subcontractors are Northrop Grumman Corp and BAE Systems Plc. Two separate, interchangeable engines are under development by United Technologies Corp’s Pratt amp; Whitney unit, and by General Electric Co and Rolls Royce Group Plc./ppBritain is due to get two F-35As from the third production batch for its operational tests and evaluation. The Netherlands would get one. Italy is close to a final decision to buy one at the same time. Italy plans to acquire 22 F-35B for their new STOVL aircraft carrier.br //ppAn Israeli purchase might be part of the fifth production series, the Pentagon program official said, about the same time Australia may buy its first./ppSource: a href=”http://in.news.yahoo.com/reuters_ids_new/20080605/r_t_rtrs_wl/twl-israel-eyes-new-lockheed-f-35-fighte-2186892.html”Yahoo!
